I started this mini quilt a few weeks ago. I love the pattern but really dislike my color choices.
Maybe when they are not next to each other, but they feel a bit garish.
I never thought I would say this, too many polka dots, well maybe they are too much the same...
What was I thinking with that big greenish yellow blob in the center block? How could I not see that????
Any way I am walking away from it and NOT finishing it. I will put the blocks in my box of orphans and cannibalize them at a later date...do you do that, just walk away if it is not working for you? I have too many other things I want to make. Now I love the pattern and want to make it but I will re-think the fabrics and do it another time.
Now it feels like spring, the candy and the eggs are waiting to be hidden.

To keep my Suzie Homemaker crown, I made Bob a crustless lemon meringue pie the other night. I very rarely make dessert but he worked hard and deserved some pie. He is not a fan of the crust so I skipped it (and saved some time and effort), it turned out great and was easy.
For those of you who are fans of the Outlander books, I just finished book 2. Just when I thought there was no where else to go, she surprised me again. I can't wait to start book 3.
Linda from Flourishing Palms alerted me that the network, Starz will be starting a series on these books this summer. I need to hurry up and get the rest of them read!

I don't see anything wrong with your blocks, and didn't see the yellow blob until you pointed it out and it still didn't look bad. But if you're not feeling the love then it's right to walk away and work on one of the zillion things you do want to sew. You're gerberas are flowering beautifully! That lemon merange so delicious!! What a great idea to make it without the crust.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I put stuff away and come back later with fresh ideas about how I can 'rescue' my project. There's usually no rush so why not? Love your Gerbera Daisies--they're my favorite.:)
ReplyDeleteI have put EVERYthing away! Funny how that hits you all of a sudden! So, crocheting has taken over right now. I LOVE the Outlander series, too--read only Books 1 2 so far--love that they are so long and involved, too. Amazing writing. hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteI love them and don't think they are too bright at all but I know if you are not happy with them you need to put them away and resurrect them later. Maybe then you will look at them differently.
ReplyDeleteI liked your blocks too, especially the polka dots. I've walked away from many projects. If you don't love, don't do it, there's way too many other ideas to explore. And besides it was a learning lesson and you learned what you don't like. That's a positive.
ReplyDeleteI think your blocks are great. My guess is that you just need MORE blocks to make the ones you have not stick out to you. A few more and they will nicely "fight" with each other and you won't notice green blobs or other things you don't like. I actually love the polka dots. Look at some of Kim McLean's quilts at the Glorious Applique blog. They are a complete mishmash of so many fabrics, but look fantastic. I think yours will be too! (But I also believe in lots of breaks and thinking about quilts too--which is why I have so many UFO's)
ReplyDeleteI hate it when that happens!! And crestless pie....what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI agree, put away the blocks if you're not feeling the love for them. Maybe later they will look better, or you'll have another plan. *says she who has 8 bins of unfinished projects*
ReplyDeleteWow, the pie sounds delish! I'll be right over!
Now I love bright and dots but you are not making them to make me happy. I put things away too. I have too many things I want to do. I have UFO's that will stay that way probably forever! I will let my children worry about them when I am gone!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what would happen if you cut the squares into quarters and mix and matched them. Although I like them as they are as well.
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks. seriously. I have started things that I don't like and sometimes I put them away. And sometimes (gasp) I throw them right in the trash. My friend almost fainted when I toldher I tossed a complete top out. Last year when I was trying to purge (especially those UFOs) I tossed two more tops. Not into them. Not into the fabric and just did not want to expend any more thought or energy on them.
ReplyDeleteHey there, Kelly! Thanks for the shout-out. I am so excited for the Outlander series to begin, though heaven knows how I will watch it! We don't get Starz on our cable channel, but maybe I can scope out something online. If you have a suggestion, please let me know. Anyway, I'm glad you're loving the books... knew you would! Diana is a delicious author! And let me just say, that I must like garish because I love your blocks! The colors are striking. Don't I see some Kaffe in there? I'm not a huge fan of dots, but the bright colors make those less noticeable. I think that with the addition of a few more blocks you'd have a real winner there. Please don't banish it!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes crave working with bold, colorful prints (and dots!) like this, but don't really like 'living' with quilts that are so bright. I think this was just your expression of spring fever, Kelly!
ReplyDeleteHey Kelly, Your polka dot blocks are very cute! Put them away for a little while and when you pull them out again, you will be looking at them with a different set of eyes. Who knows what you will want to do with them then...... ;)
ReplyDeleteLoved the Outlander series! I devoured them one after the other and every book is 1000 pages!
Happy Sewing and Happy Reading!
the pattern you used is very nice and actually I like the blocks. Maybe you will like them more if you store them away for a year or so. I skip projects but always save the orphans blocks. You could use them for the back of a quilt perhaps? I voted today. Fun to see the results. purple is not my colour so I'm surprised it was number two on the list.
