Scrap Giveaway!
I just had to start with a non quilting picture. My granddaughter, Madison made her first communion a couple of weeks ago and today was their May Procession. The school has all the 2nd graders wear their communion outfits to the procession. At least they get 2 wearings out of them! She opted to leave the veil at home but the crown got the thumbs up! I just love this age.
I posted this on Instagram....we had a speaker (I can't remember who) and she told us to pick out your fabrics, mix them all up and throw them on the floor. If one color is not working it will stand out. I just realized I use this method all the time without even thinking about it. Notice there is purple in there! Have you ever done this?
Here they are all nicely ironed waiting for me to sew them together.
I follow Red Pepper Quilts and I love everything she makes! When I saw this rectangular postage stamp type quilt I knew I wanted to make it. I decided to try one block to see if it was for me. I think so.....it would be a good retreat block where you just sew and cut, sew and cut, little thinking required.
So as I decided to start yet another quilt, I really feel anxious about all these scraps. Here you see some sorted by colors.
Strips in a bin. mostly from assorted jelly rolls.
Another basket that sits on the floor next to my machine. I really do need to come up with a system that works for me and stick with it! For today it's just too much for me to deal with! So I decided to clean them out with a giveaway. I will not guarantee any sizes but there will be a variety for sure! If I can't stuff them all into one envelope I will have 2 to give away.
To win, leave me a comment and tell me what is your favorite size strip(s). Be sure to leave me your email address if you are a no reply commenter or I will not be able to contact you. This is in the US only because of the price of postage. I will pick the winner next Friday 5/20, I need some time to clean out those scraps! GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!
In the wings are some more that need borders and quilting..........
Kelly
I've actually been thinking about what size strips I like best, in the process of working on using my own scraps! So far, I'm not sure. I like 2.5", 3", and 3.5". Your scraps look so fun. :)

DeleteI love scrappy quilts! My favorite size of strips are 1 1/2 inch wide although I also work with jelly rolls strips on occasion. Thanks for the chance to win your scraps!
ReplyDeletejlpfeffer at gmail dot com
Your colors are beautiful. 2 1/2 strips are what I use most
ReplyDeleteYour colors are beautiful. 2 1/2 strips are what I use most
ReplyDeleteI wore my first communion dress most Sundays that summer. Mother made several different ties or belts in various colors to zip it up. My sister made her first communion the following May so my dress became her dress. Have not thought about that in a long time.
ReplyDeleteStrips 1.5 to 3.0 work most of the time but I am getting ready to try strip piecing on phone book pages so any old bit will work. pbxmimi at Hotmail dot com
Your scraps are so happy! Favorite strips? 2" I guess. Congratulations to your granddaughter!
ReplyDeleteI usually use 1.5" and 2" strips. I sew them together, cut them for 4 patches, and use them as leader and enders. Then they get made into quilts, often baby quilts. Your scraps are so colorful and would make great baby quilts.

I have been cutting fabric scraps since January to "get a handle on my scraps." At this point in the process, I would say I must like 2 1/2 inch strips the best. It is the largest container of cut scraps so far. I also have lots of 1 1/2 inch strips thinking of a log cabin quilt. I don't have anything sorted by color. I like seeing all the colors together.
ReplyDeleteI like to use 2" strips the best, but generally I just pick scraps randomly out of my basket. Whatever I pick up, that's the one I use!
ReplyDeleteI'm ready to make yet another scrap quilt, and your beautiful fabrics will play so nicely with mine. :)
I am guessing I cut more 2" strips than others...but I also use 4" & 6" lately. I looooove Scrappy...so use whatever scraps I can! giggle... Thank you for chance to win your Give-a-way too! :D
ReplyDeleteLove the Quilts...and Blocks ..you shared here! & your Grangirlie is Beautiful!!
I don't need your scraps (I have too many of my own!), but I wanted to say your granddaughter is a beauty. You must be very proud!
ReplyDeleteAnother great scrap management system and one that we don't often mention, is to gift them away. It's exciting to play with others scrap fabric, you just never know what you will find. And as Bonnie hunters has said, "once you go scrappy, you never go back."

Your granddaughter is beautiful! What a special time! I love scraps; I think my favorite strip size is 2 1/2". Have you ever noticed that it's more fun to play with someone else's scraps?
ReplyDeleteHow lovely your granddaughter looks! Your post brings back so many memories of First Communions & May Processions. My Grandmother made 6 white dresses over the years, as we were 6 girls & 3 boys.
ReplyDeleteAs to strips & scraps, I work with any size: 1-1/2 " to 3 inches wide and any length, Just took a class with Sarah Bond where we strip paper pieced in the round, using 1-3/4" wide by 7" long. They really can be any length, depending on the radius of your circle!
Good luck to the winners ! Your granddaughter is so sweet...how time flies...
ReplyDeleteLove your work! I like 2 1/2 inch strips the best, but I'm not picky!
ReplyDeletelenelson(at)mail(dot)com
Oh, I love scraps. Any sizes, any colours, all would be delightful to win in your Giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI like 2 1/2 inch scraps, but I think all scraps are wonderful. Thank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYour granddaughter is so... adorable. I can feel your pride through the post--as you should be! As for favorite strip sizes- I love any size however prefer do not tend to less than and inch--cause if I can't see much off it when I am sewing--no-one else will be able to see whats left after
ReplyDeleteyou add that seam allowance!
I think it is obvious I need stronger glasses to! HAHA
ReplyDeleteMost patterns seem to call for 2.5" strips. I like any size because I paper piece. My very favorite size is a one YARD strip, lol. LeeAnna at leeannaquilts at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI like 2 1/2 inch strips best, but really, I am a fan of scraps in many sizes. I often use them for paper piecing and have made a bunch of wonky log cabin quilts from scraps. Thanks for offering to share your scraps -- I love using lots of variety, so scraps from other people add to the fun!
ReplyDeleteI love scraps and like 2" and 2-1/2" strips. I would be very glad to have your scraps. Thanks for the give away!
ReplyDeletehatcrazy@bellsouth.net
I like 2 or 2 1/2 inch size strips. Thank you for the giveaway. Hugs,
ReplyDeleteMy scraps mostly end up as 2.5 scraps...the fav size I like to use
ReplyDeleteMaddie looked so pretty, like a little princess! I'm glad she wore her dress again. I guess I like 2 1/2 strips but I also like 3 and 3 1/2, or really any size! I'm Stephanie B. ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics! I like 2 1/2" strips.
ReplyDeleteI like 2", 2 1/2" and lately have been playing with 1 1/2" strips - the smaller, the cuter they are! It's so much fun playing with someone else's scraps. Thanks for the opportunity to win. chocolatewiskers@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI cut some of my scraps in 2 1/2' strips I would love your scraps. farmersxwife@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is 2.5 strips. I would love your scraps because they are so bright and happy. Mine are mostly medium. lorainejarman@att.net
ReplyDeleteI find myself using mostly 2.5" strips, they are so versatile. However, there is something to be said for smaller strips too. Especially if they are varied widths placed randomly. It adds so much character to a shape.
ReplyDeleteI find I use 2.5" strips because there are so many jelly roll books out there for inspiration. I must say, your rectangle block looks a perfect stash busting/sit and sew project. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your scraps! My favorite size strip is 2 1/2 inches wide, but any would be exciting!
ReplyDeleteI don't use a ruler a lot when I cut out strips, but it seems that most of my strips and up being about 2 inches wide. Great job cleaning out your scraps! They are fun to use, but you get to a point where it's more fun to share. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteI love 2-1/2 inch strips.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing a lot of donation scrappy quilts for charity so your scraps would be perfect as an addition to mine. I'm making a lot of string blocks.
Peggy in NJ
Congratulations to your granddaughter. Beautiful scrapes. Wonderful scrappy quilts. I don't have a favorite size strip. 24Tangent@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI use all sizes of strips and squares in my scrappy project. Most I sort by color or type of fabric, and if they are wide enough to turn into a binding, I put them in a separate basket. Why do someone else's scraps always look more fun?!
ReplyDelete😥😥😥😊😊😁😁 I should move to the US! 😀
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome scraps -- my favorite colors! Thanks for the giveaway. cherylrandleman4@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! I love working with scraps and it is double the fun when you are working with some new scraps rather than your own. It all depends on the project, but it seems I use more 1 1/2 inch and 2 inch strips more than any others. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteYour granddaughter looks like a real sweetheart!
Your scraps are great! Beautiful colors for a scrappy quilt!
ReplyDeleteI can identify with your grandma's pride. We are so blessed to have these wonderful children in our lives. I'm guessing that you have made a quilt or two for her. I love all colors you use in your quilts, and I'd be delighted to put your scraps to good use. And thanks for tip about throwing everything together and looking for what stands out.
ReplyDeleteI love scrap fabric. I love finding a home for all the leftover pieces. I love my scraps and try to use them all up in all kinds of ways. I would love to have your scraps. I paper piece a lot so any size works for me.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your clean out. I suppose I use mostly 2 1/2 in. strips but I also use a lot of 3 1/2 in. squares. But then I change my mind a lot, too.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite strip size is 2 1/2. I recently worked on getting my scraps under control. I followed Bonnie Hunter's cue and have cut up my scraps to be ready to go in sizes that I commonly use. Or I plan for a particular scrap quilt that I want to do in the future and cut my scraps to meet those needed. Good luck in your taming of the scraps...it's like revisiting old friends when you do?
ReplyDeleteI love scraps any size any shape. I love all size strips. There are so many ways to use them...log cabins, crazies, bricks, frames, rails etc. etc.! cheers! cspoonquilt@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYour grandaughter is so cute! Congratulations to her on her first communion. I was just sitting here cutting up my scraps into 2" squares, and then I saw your post about scraps! My favorite kind of scraps are 2" or slightly bigger. I LOVE sewing 2" squares more than any other sewing. I'm making a charm quilt. Thanks for the scrap giveaway! sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteI'm too new to quilting to know for sure, but I'm working on a quilt that requires 2.5" strips - following a tutorial on Red Pepper Quilts for a postage stamp quilt. The problem is that I'm such a newbie that I don't actually have many scraps. So I'm cutting my 2.5" strips from yards, half-yards, whatever I have. Not sure how it will turn out, but loving every minute of it!
ReplyDelete2.5 is my favorite, I think I can go just about anywhere from there! I gather all of those in a bag with plans for a coin quilt and everything else gets thrown together ;)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scrap strip size is 2.5 it's cute and perfect for so many things! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteit is so fun and freeing to give away scraps! Don['t put my name in the hat though... I have limited space.
ReplyDeleteSmallest size (and my favorite to keep) is 1.5 inch strips. I have been working on 5 inch blocks as leader/enders for nearly a decade and I love the tiny scraps of variety!
ReplyDeleteI preference 2' strips but also work a lot with1,5' and 2,5'. Those three sizes also work well together. Thanks for the chance to get more scraps. I do live in Sweden but is going to be in Ca in June so if (keeping my fingers crossed!) I win there will be a US address :) louisesjodinshort@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm fond of 2.5" strips... but 2" is good too! I love that rectangular postage stamp quilt from Red Pepper... I'm planning on playing with that design too...thanks for the giveaway... I think your scraps are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love all kinds of scrap. I noticed recently mine are kind of in need of replenishing with something new.
ReplyDeleteI would put your scraps to good use on a string donation quilt. Thanks for a chance.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea! I am in love with jelly rolls so most of my strips are 2 1/2 inches. What a sweet picture of you grand daughter Abh10066 at aol.com
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking the other day how many of my quilts have some of the same fabrics in them and was wondering if they're beginning to look alike.
ReplyDeleteMost of the strips I have seem to be less than 1 1/2" wide but I prefer wider strips, at least 2 or 2 1/5" wide, because there are more options for using them. Yours look wonderful. Thanks for offering them.
--Nancy. (ndmessier @ aol.com, joyforgrace.blogspot.com)
Love your choice of fabrics - they make me happy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great assortment of scraps! 2 1/2" are great use in many scrap quilts.
ReplyDeleteI love hand-me-down scraps, because they are so different from my own, and can make for nice and wild combinations. I love scrappy, both regular and improve designs.
ReplyDeleteDon't count me in on your giveaway because I'm international, but i wanted to say how wonderful those quilts in your last photo look!
ReplyDeleteI mostly cut strips into 2 1/2", but will make whatever size I can with what I have left of the scraps.
ReplyDeleteA friend and I have been trading some 2 1/2" squares, and her additions make my stash fabrics look so much more interesting. I understand what you mean when you write that you're afraid that all your quilts are beginning to look the same. Same doesn't mean bad, but variety sparks something new for me.
ReplyDeleteScraps are fun to work with. I like to foundation paper piece with them or epp. I love 2.5 inch strips so that I can use them for hexies. Thank you for the fun chance. powersjlc (at) gmail (dot) com.
ReplyDeleteoh wow...your going to town in you stash organization, shuffle, restacking, arrangement? (you pick one)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I would like some of your color to play with.
I like 2.5 inch strips! :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your quilts! Scrap quilts are such fun. I like 2 1/2" strips and often cut up my scraps into this size to use for scrappy quilts and mini-quilts. Thanks for the giveaway. Several years ago I won a blogger's scrap bag giveaway and I had such fun with them...maybe I'll be lucky again!
ReplyDeleteMaddie is so beautiful. Love the pic. I mostly cut 2.5 inch strips. Would love your scraps. It would give me the incentive to make my first scrap quilt. What fun would that be. Good luck everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your scraps and that rectangle postage stamp is going to be wonderful! I never have scraps so I don't know what size I like best but I'm guessing it would be a 2 1/2" strips. Thanks for the chance to win! sarah123quilt {AT} gmail dot (com).
ReplyDeleteFavorite strip is probably 1-1/2" because I like to sew small pieces.
ReplyDeleteAm beginning to collect some happy, modern fabrics so a scrapbag giveaway is perfect. Thanks!
I'm all about scrappy quilts. I'd rather make a scrappy quilt than any other project. Having someone else's scraps making friends with mine would be so fun!
ReplyDeleteIt seems that most of my strips are 2.5", but any size works... you just have to be more creative. And that is the fun part, to me at least.
ReplyDeletedetermineddebby at gmail dot com
I gave my scraps away because I was tired of looking at the same fabrics, so I could use an injection of new "stuff?"
ReplyDeleteI probably use 2.5" strips most. Other's scraps always look more interesting than my own.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite size is definitely 1" . Small scraps are the best.
ReplyDeleteI love ALL strips and I follow Red Pepper Quilts also. Not that any of mine ever look that good. But I never stop trying. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love scraps. Size doesn't matter. Thank you so much for the chance. dorthac@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI can't really say I have a favorite size strip. That would be like picking a favorite child! I love them all and believe they all have a place in a quilt...just maybe not all in the same quilt.
ReplyDeleteI seem to manage to use strips in every width and length. Just today I was cutting all widths of strips to a five inch length for a particular project. Using strips from someone else's collection sounds like fun. It's kind of you to do this.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing the photo of your granddaughter in her First Communion dress. Seven or eight more years and I'll have a photo of my granddaughter in hers.
2.5 inch strips are my fave
ReplyDeleteHi! How fun it would be to have someone else's scraps! I think I tend to use strips that are between 2.5 and 3 inches in width, and pretty much any length.
ReplyDeleteGOOOOOOO Kelly! I just saw your post with the brown bee block...I about dropped my coffee cup! You are inspiring me but I have now realized I won't get my fabric sorted by out studio tour Saturday. Mi guess my guests will see my room as it really is!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how grown up Madison is !! and pretty
ReplyDeleteI like to work small usually, so I like 1 1/2" strips.
I must say 2 1/2 in strips work for me. I love the idea put it all together on the ground and have a look. I sort my little pieces by color, it works for me, but sometimes have that tote filled with ones that need to be sorted! yup a created mess to deal with!!
