Dirty Hands

This block (Apron Strings, Farm Girl Vintage) is about the only thing I have sewed in the past few weeks. I had lots of twin babies sewing to do but have to wait until after the shower to show you.

I have had my hands in the dirt for the past 2 weeks. It is very meditative and allows you time to think without distraction. I don't take my phone out with me for fear I will lose it or worse bury it!
The above foxglove is courtesy of  I am guessing a bird. I know they are biennials (the plant grows the first year and flowers the second year) and maybe missed it in the garden last year? No matter I will enjoy it!

This is a gorgeous shrub that is almost black in color, I love the contrast with the green in the garden. I don't know the name of it. Can anyone tell me?

This year it also got these pretty white flowers, a nice surprise!

These hostas are enormous this year and love living in this part shade spot. That really is the key, finding a spot they love and letting them go. They are about 3' across.

These are on my porch and I think the colors will look great together once they grow in. It's a mostly shady spot so I have to be creative!

Out back by my deck are some gerbera daisies......right now only the red is in bloom but there is also orange and hot pink in there.

Not a summer can go by without zinnias. I found this double cherry color and am so excited for them to grow. I also planted lots of sunflowers......

This rose bush was almost dug out this year. For the past few years it was not growing or blooming. This was the year I was getting rid of it. Our cold spring saved it. Imagine my surprise when I saw how much it had grown (tripled in size) and the hundreds of buds all over it. It is an old fashion type that is extremely fragrant, I loved brushing up against it while I weeded.

So as much as I like to think I am in charge of my garden, Mother Nature definitely has the last word! You never know what will happen.

My sewing room is a mess. My goal today is to get it cleaned up and start sewing, I really miss it.
What are you working on?

Kelly

  2. I think the unknown plant is a Black Lace Elderberry. I just bought one, and it has the same foliage and flowers. As a bonus, it produces elderberries, I guess in the fall. I may need a recipe for elderberry jam!

  3. Elderflower cordial is very popular in the UK and is wonderful with Soda Water in summer.
We live in a temperate climate and the garden is always green at least, with a number of things that flower through winter. Yesterday was the first day of winter, and quite cold by our standards, but the camellias are in full bloom, as are the jonquils, and the azaleas well on the way. It would be rather nice to have defined seasons, and have the joy of finding your beautiful flowers each spring.

  4. Oh, your garden is beautiful! That kind of makes up for not sewing, doesn't it?

Good luck with cleaning up the studio! I'm still poking away at mine and not making much progress.

  5. Foxgloves are my absolute favorite flower. I start them (an annual variety that I have to order the seeds) from seed in my basement under a grow light every February so I can enjoy their blooms through most of August. I wish they would show up so easily for me! I hope you can get back to stitching soon :0)

  6. You're good at playing in the dirt. Your flower beds and pots look great. Hopefully, now you can squeeze in some sewing time, because there won't be much time after the babies are born!

  8. I love your garden! There is such a great variety of colors and plantings. I only planted my big pots on the deck so I only a little bit of watering to do. You are so brave to post the photo of your sewing room - you know our rooms look like this more times than we'd like!

  10. Your plants are very happy. I had beautiful pots of hostas on my deck, until I took down the trees. Hostas do not like full sun!

  13. Maybe the universe's plan is for you to be clearing your thoughts in the garden so you are open and free for when returning to the sewing room . Sometimes being alone and not distracted brings you back with "eyes wide open" and recharged. And hell--look at your garden--beautiful! Your a winner all the way around--I'd say!

  14. Kelly, your black shrub is a black lace elderberry bush. It will produce fruit as well. I have one that I've let grow as a tree in my garden. I'll see if I can posts photos on my blog today. They are difficult to find so count yourself lucky! :) Hugs, Mickie

  15. If your sewing room is a mess, it is because you are certainly a busy quilter !! :)

  17. Kelly, I have boy-and-girl grandchildren. They were given LOTS of coordinating (of course) receiving blankets when they were born, and my daughter-in-law asked me to make quilts out of them. It was great fun to use those blankets and create a prissy quilt and a boyish one. They are eleven years old now, and they still have them on their beds.
