Little Things Can Go A Long Way

I came across the most amazing idea (well in my world). There is a movement called Little Free Library and it is the coolest thing! They encourage people to make or buy little birdhouse type structures, put them in front of their house or business and fill them with books. The public is invited to take a book and leave a book for others to read, all for free!
Imagine my surprise when I found a house only a couple miles away that is participating! If you go to the site you can actually find a map where these little libraries can be found. So go see if there is one near you. If anyone gets a book I want to know!

In the past month or so I have put out some thought provoking questions and I have very much enjoyed all the comments that were left with lots of opinions. I thank everyone for being so honest yet respectful. Some people blog for fame and fortune, some to start a business and some just do it for fun and friendship or to journal their quilting life. I fall into the latter category. I am happy to share what I know or don't know and I enjoy meeting all the quilters that I have met near and far. I have learned a lot too, like think before you type. A careless comment can crush someone who may have worked hours figuring something out or working on something they love, even if you don't. We all know the saying "there are many ways to skin a cat" (seriously? how many could there be?). There are also many different ways to quilt and get the same results.
I think blogging is here to stay, it seems like everyone enjoys a good blog post over a Facebook post. Well at least from the comments you all left, thanks again!

Kelly

  1. I saw this a while back and it keeps popping up in my head. I think I need to get my husband on this, it's such a cute idea!!! There is an open field next to my house in my neighborhood, the perfect spot!

  2. Loving the tardis library!! I have been incredibly slack blogging and blog reading for a long while, however I agree Kelly, I do think blogging is nicer and here to stay, I still look to blogs (and youtube) when I'm trying to figure out something I haven't learnt yet!! Your blog is always great! xo

  3. Here in Cincinnati we have a number of these "little libraries". One family near me has a box for books for adults, and one lower to the ground for kids' books!

  4. How fun that someone made a tardis library! A friend of mine ecently blogged about a free library in Melbourne. At a train station I used to commute from has shelves of books for swapping. I found some great books from there. I think sometimes people write things that they don't know may be hurtful. I definitely try to stick to that old saying " if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say it".

  5. Great library idea! I'm so glad you received respectful comments. Sometimes people aren't as careful as they could be, but when it comes to something like quilting, there are very strong opinions aren't there? lol

  6. It is funny you should post about the little libraries today; we are on our road trip in Madison, WI right now, and I saw a little house shaped one here; I'd never heard of the idea. Now I know what it's all about! sarah@forrussia.org

  8. How darn cute! and what a clever idea. I really hope I spot one of these. As for comments--Words can lift up or cut deep. I guess I don't understand when there is negativity.

    1. I live just over in OHIO and think this is a Wonderful Idea... Saw on News couple days ago that a town I think in Kansas wanted a Young boy to Remove his Free Library because it didn't follow Building and Town codes... What a stupid thing for the Town to Quibble about.. when I am sure there are rundown houses and crappy looking yards or buildings etc.. that they could be tending too not a New Little Free Library...

  10. I've been busy for the last two months doing programs and am now just catching up with the blogs. I'm so glad you are keeping the blog going. I enjoy seeing your projects! You got wonderful treasures while visiting your sister. Our neighborhood has talked about doing a free library here but hasn't so far. Enjoy this fantastic weather! When I am not working I am outside in the garden and hope you are too! Each weekend has been a delight! Hugs, Mickie

  12. This is such a wonderful discovery. I think it's right up your alley. Let me know when Bob builds you one. I'll come. There aren't any near me, but I see there's one in .key West. Thanks for sharing your finds.
I have to say that I admire the young women who can turn blogging into a career. What a great way to be able to be present for your kids.

  16. Don't you love this! I saw my first little free library a few years ago. I would have one, but no one and I mean no one comes down my street (cul de sac) ha ha

  17. This Little Library thing is just about the coolest idea I've come across in a long time. There isn't one near me, but I'm sure it's because of deed restrictions in our area - nothing permitted in yards, including fences or clotheslines. Still, I think it's such a great concept, and I'm tickled to see how widespread it is. Thank you for sharing this!
