Color
Yesterday at guild our speaker was Joyce Hughes. Her pathway into quilting was an interesting one. She wanted to make a Tshirt quilt for her daughter who was graduating from high school. She went from that to this beautiful Fairy Quilt.
There is a lot of detail and she uses a lot of thread painting to make these quilts come alive.
I am not a huge fan of embellishment but she used it very well and it enhanced the quilt and did not overwhelm it.
There are actual rhinestone jewels in the treasure box.
The one thing that I think draws you to her quilts is the use of a lot of color, it is very eye catching and wants to make you look even closer for the details.
So the other day I was reading and came across an article about colors we are drawn to.......I was surprised to say the least about the results. These are the top 5 colors that were voted on as favorites.
#1 Blue
#2 PURPLE!
#3 Red
#4 Green
#5 Pink
Seriously purple as number 2? I was very surprised I was expecting red or green. I didn't think that pink would be in the top 5 either. So let's have our own little poll. If you look to the top right of this post there is a place for you to vote for your favorite color. I see a few already went ahead and voted. Leave a comment and tell me what you think about purple being #2........
Aqua is added to mine because for right now it is my favorite color.
How about a giveaway too? I will randomly pick a name on Tuesday, April 15th. You can win 4 fat quarters in your favorite color......yes it can be purple!
Really? Purple #2???
The giveaway is now closed.
I also wanted to show you this cute fabric my friend Cheryl gave me. I have a fun idea that I want to make using this fabric. Hopefully this weekend.
Okay now go vote!
Kelly
Cheryl's got your number! Can't wait to see what you make.
ReplyDeleteI think I always stereotyped purple as an old lady's color. I want to feel younger!
ReplyDeleteThese year it seems to be yellow. Last year it was orange. The color I have the most of in my stash is blue right now.
ReplyDeletewow!!! That quilt is amazing. I am further amazed that my favorite Orange hasn't gotten any votes?!!!
ReplyDeleteI am an orange lover also! Anything bright really.......Thanks for the opportunity.

Purple would be my very last choice! I am surprised.
ReplyDeleteThat fairy quilt would be wonderful to see live. I find it so hard to pick a favourite colour. Pantones colour of the year is Orchid, I wonder if that is influencing the popularity in purple?
ReplyDeleteBlue as number one is really no surprise. If you poll quilters, nearly every one of them will admit that their first quilt was blue. It's considered the "safe" color. Funny how two of my three favs are NOT on that list: aqua (like you), and orange. Loves me the orange these days! So cheery.
ReplyDeleteThere was a time I didn't like purple at all! Now I like it in the brown-downed, violet-ish shades but wow! crazy to see it's #2 on the list!
ReplyDeleteHi!!!! I do love shades of purple and the radiant orchid is very pretty!!!! My fave right now is turquoise!!!!! I really don't have any colors I don't like in one shade or another!!!!! I love them all!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is also aqua. Purple is surprising as number 2! I have to say that I like different colors in different situations. I love purple flowers but really don't get crazy about it in my home décor. And also I think this poll could have completely different outcomes if taken 10 years in the future. I have been enjoying seeing more purple fabrics lately, but I wouldn't have given it a second glance 10 years ago. Color is interesting isn't it!?
ReplyDeleteOf course blue is #1. What other color is there? Joyce was a very inspiring quilter.
ReplyDeleteI love pink and it's my favorite color but when I quilt I go to the civil wars or reds, navy, black - traditional colors. Go figure! I think I have used purple twice in my 25+ years of quilting. It was a color we had to have in our shop but I let others pick them!
ReplyDeleteI love every kind of green and black too which I guess is the absence of color...
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I'm very taken with aqua, it just makes quilts zing. I do love just about any colour though lol, the joy of loving scrap quilts, everything works. Purple for 2 is a surprise.
ReplyDeletePurple is a definite surprise! I'm always drawn to aqua
ReplyDeleteColors can sure generate all kinds of feelings. I'm mostly into red at the moment, it just has a distinctive energy field. If I look back at the quilts I've made over the years, I could plot my color likes and dislikes. Blue is probably the all time winner.
ReplyDeletewow those results were surprising! purple? seriously?
ReplyDeleteI have different favorites for different things, it's hard to pick one clear favorite.
interesting quilts -
p.s. super fabric - love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, that was hard! My favorite neutral is Black--to me it makes just about everything POP. But I have been L/A quilting several customer quilts that have the Aqua--and they are just screaming for me to do something with them. Funny how I am into the Aqua with the black. Go Figure!
ReplyDeleteAqua- especially with red- is my favorite! Purple? I like the clear, true colors as accents. I always think of it as a Red Hat color (which I sadly could be one...) But hey- Red Hat ladies are known for having fun, right??!!
ReplyDeleteI love aqua, really all the water colors. I also like purple but have to admit I'm a little surprised it's number 2!
ReplyDeleteI voted. My favorite color is blue and all the variations to aqua and teal. Next up for me greens. I do like purple but mostly as it ocurs in batiks with blue and purple together. I have to say that since I started quilting there is no color that I do not like. I do prefer mor clear colors rather than muddy hues. ;)
ReplyDeleteHmm, must mean that a lot of people being polled are getting older - "when I am an old woman, I will wear purple "- lol!! My favorite color is aqua/turquoise - always liked that since I was young but fuchsia is really close with that!
ReplyDeleteSeriously Kelly? You expect me to nominate ONE favourite colour!! Ummmm, aqua is what I voted for but I would also like to nominate pink, green, red and grey!! I just love colour!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm with the RED crowd! It seems like I use it a great deal. Even adding a spot of red to 'un-red' quilts!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

I love red and am making a red and black quilt now
ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised that purple is #2 !!
ReplyDeleteI voted for aqua !!
I am loving aqua right now, too!
ReplyDeleteI guess I am predictable because I would choose blue, but I am surprised that yellow or orange are not on the list. They are such cheerful colours.
ReplyDeletePurple? Really, Not one of my favorites. Mine is Pink! This is fun!
ReplyDeletePurple? Only sometimes do I like purple, depending on my mood. Pair it with green and I'm happy! Green is great with everything!
ReplyDeleteWho did they poll? Purple is the color I have the VERY least of in my stash. Red - definitely red is best :0)
ReplyDeleteI am stunned by the amazing work in the photos you have posted. I love my embroidery but can't see me having the patience to do that.
ReplyDeleteAs for favourite colours - I love the rainbow and always have trouble choosing!
I do love Aqua, but I find I am always drawn to Orange, or Coral, to be more exact! As far as purple goes, I'm surprised to. at least I was until I stared doing bee block swaps. In the last year I've had purple (with grey or black) 3 times, red 3 times, and aqua and red twice. But I also had two other aqua combos, so that technically makes aqua the leader in my informal survey of 5 bee swaps..........!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely green for me!

Love Certain Jewel Colors as well as Denim Colors of Blue.. not a Fan of aqua but find I am steering Toward Plum, lilac, Lavender, Violet, Purple, and Eggplant (this is the Color of my Dress for my Son's wedding in July ).
ReplyDeleteHmmm? Tough! Agua or pink? I'm going outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and think about it!
ReplyDeleteI'm an aqua lover from way back ~ which means I have a lot of it in my stash!
ReplyDeleteI'm as surprised as you are that purple is number one.
I'm another AQUA lover... I wonder if these #1's change....
ReplyDeleteSusie
Purple is my favorite color, closely followed by green. I guess you could say this about any color, but purple just seems to have so many shades from lavender to deep royal purple that's almost black. I can see it being popular because it can blend or standout s needed.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't make Purple #2.......probably not even #50! lol
ReplyDeleteI too, LOVE Aqua!! Not much on Neutral's either. Guess I have "Picky" Taste-buds! :)
I think that purple is part of a long term trend right now, which is why it is #2 -- I remember in the early 2000s my sister in law getting a deep eggplant colored couch, and also painting walls lavander and deep mauve, and a few years ago it came into clothing. So that's my take on why purple is #2 -- it would be interesting to see what the polls say 5 years from now. :) Thanks for the giveaway -- my favorite color is pink of all sorts, especially paired with aqua! sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color will always be yellow! Then red, aqua, lime and orange...all my favs! XO
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's red!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised at purple, too! But now I'm really surprised at the tally for aqua on your list! Wow! lol
ReplyDeleteI just went to this post a different way and it does appear my vote went thru. Sooo strange! Well, I might try stuffing the ballot box: teal is nice but......
ReplyDeleteI love purple! It is SO my favorite color! Everything purple for me.
