Random Friday

Now you can see.....

why I had to remake

these blocks!
The recipients are probably thinking maybe this swap wasn't such a good idea. Not to fear, they are going in the reject pile. Seriously, what was I thinking? Some days....

Fallon

This was a week where I was off schedule. My granddaughter Fallon was in a district wide spelling bee. Seven schools competed and while she didn't win, her school did and they got to take home the big spelling bee trophy.
I have never been to one before and talk about nerve wracking! Oh it was fun though and I hope to go again next year. The kids were adorable and there were some tears. We were cheering for them all.

Tonight we are having some friends over for dinner. It is not fancy but I like to set a pretty table to make it feel special. Over the years I have found lots and lots of damask napkins. At first I avoided the ones with the initials on them, unless I found my own. Now it makes me wonder who took the time and love to embroider these so nicely. It's a shame if no one uses them.

I even ironed them this morning to make them look a little nicer. What do you think these initials are? I also like the size, they are big to fit your lap and stains seem to come right out. I even like them wrinkled.

Lastly, I am hooked on these EOS lip balms. I think the packaging is cute and they work great. The pink and white one smells like coconut suntan lotion and brings you right to the beach! I have them stashed everywhere.
Thank you for all the nice comments on my UFO pile quilt. It was a really fun exercise and I hope to do it again.

  2. I love those houses! I love the multi-colored houndstooth fabric, but I mostly love the wonky log cabins.

  3. I remember being in the district spelling bee when I was in 5th grade! I spelled my first word 'tragedy' wrong from sheer nerves and have never done so again.:) Very sweet little house blocks. The addition of the log cabin piecing is wonderful!

  4. You are so much fun! I can totally see where you were going with your little houses. I really like them! And I think the initials are M A, but that second initial is kind of tricky. You totally gave me one of those, "yeah, why have I not realized that myself moments," when you were talking about your lovely napkins. You're totally right, the initials really add some interesting, maybe even a bit mysterious, history to the linens. I'm not going to reject any because of their monograms again :) Please congratulate your lovely and intelligent granddaughter from me! She did a lot to get to the level where she was! And most importantly she's a trier, a person who will stick their neck out and try! I have always admired my daughter for that, too. I think it is one of the most admiral traits of successful people :) Have a great week!

  5. Okay, so we will see these little houses popping up somewhere else one day?
Well done to your granddaughter for taking part in the spelling bee. A great effort to participate.
The napkins are lovely and I do agree about using them. What a waste of beautiful embroidery otherwise.
I hope you had a lovely meal.

  6. I agree with Beth - I think the initials are MA.
I have a cupboard full of beautiful napery of all descriptions, some from my grandmother, some later ones. I never use them because I loathe ironing them. But I use all the lovely tableware I have - plates and glassware is so much easier to wash than fabric napkins!

  7. Congrats to your grand daughter! I love the houses. You don't like them? I think the initials are Ma, lower case - a - because someone embroidered it for their Mother.

I love cloth napkins. We use them all the time here. Those linen ones are lovely. It looks like a "M" and "A" to me.

  10. I think those both of those houses are really fun!! Congratulations to Fallon to be part of a spelling team. It was so good you could go and watch. I love beautiful cloth napkins too. I think it's great that you get them even if they aren't your initials.

  11. Such a creative idea-- the damask napkins. Why limit yourself to just your initials. The mix up is so much more fun!

  12. You're so good to think of buying and using old monogrammed napkins. That one looks like a stylized M and a. Fun to go to a spelling bee, huh? Were you spelling along in your head? And did you have a good showing?! :-)

  13. Hi Kelly, I am delighted to meet you. Your quilts are so pretty. I love the cheerful colors and fabrics that you use. I started quilting about a year and a half ago . . . once that quilting bug bites you, there's one turning back :) I am in awe of your talent and hope that by following your blog, maybe some of your talent will rub off on me. One can only dream :)
I am your newest follower and I would love to invite you over to my blog. I am celebrating my three year blogging birthday with a Give-A-Way. It's not much but it is homemade.
Have a lovely day, Connie :)

  14. What a delightful post! Fallon is so sweet, congratulations to her and her school. Now I have to try the EOS, I have always thought it was silly to have a big round ball for a lip balm but I trust your judgement - haha!
