Now how great of an idea is this for a quilt? One of the members of Calico Cutters, Nancy Powell made this for her husband. A very guy quilt, don't you think?

Today after guild we went to the Wayne Art Center to see the Art Elements show that featured some very prominent art quilters. What do you think this quilt is made of? Look closely.....
Band-Aids....used Band-Aids.....used Band-Aids that she found....here and there....ugh! some of them still have blood on them and who know what else! I am really curious to know, how you all feel about this kind of art. On the one hand it is totally pushing the envelope but on the other hand eeewwww.
I guess to each his own but would you pay $9,000 for this? Inquiring minds want to know..... I just read part of the description, some were hand stitched. I hope you are not eating while you are reading this.....

I love the look of the Bandaids but human gore... No thank you! Still I admire everyone who expands our view of the craft. My dog would try and eat this quilt... All $9,000 of it...

If I had $9000 to spare (and I certainly DO NOT), I might buy it...just so I could throw it where it belongs...in a bio-hazard bin. Used band-aids she Found??? That is disgusting.

You get the idea of how I feel.
When you're at the doctor's office, or a hospital, they throw away bandaids in those haz-mat, red containers, because of the risk of infection! This is beyond gross.

I can't fathom wanting to handle other people's gross bodily fluids that were on those bandaids. Yuk..Id need a shower after being in the same room with it. It's shocking they allowed it in the show.
I'm surprised in this day and age of bio-hazard paranoia and extreme caution that this would even be allowed to be displayed! Did it have a yellow caution tape preventing viewers from getting too close? If not, it should have!

Had it been made with small pieces of felt say, mosaiced together, it could have been really clever.

It's disgusting and it's not quilting. But here's something you probably don't know - this piece won 1st prize at the SAQA quilt show this year! What were the judges thinking.
It really caught my eye. At first I thought it was cork sliced very thin - until I saw the close up picture and read the description. It is very attractive and very well done.
No, I would not purchase this, nor would I want to be handling it. However, I do find it a creative and expressive use of the medium with which Beth Barron chose to express herself. I find it harmless and hope she finds a buyer. Technically, it is a quilt - three layers sewn together. When you look at that it is no different than looking at a felted wool table topper.
We are all in a quandry, are we not, when we want money to go to the arts? - but NOT THAT KIND - just MY KIND. I, for one, do not favor a lot of what is called "art". I think it is a bunch of government granted nonsense. Nonetheless, there are many creative people out there using those funds and doing a good thing.

I just loved Nancy's quilt though - she started it at the retreat and made fun of herself about it but doesn't it look fabulous?!
I like the arty concept of using band aids but using used ones is really Yuck! I also think it would work better in a a modern art gallery where you expect some pieces to be thought provoking but when I go to a quilt show I don't want to be challenged like that. The first quilt is great, really effective!!
Oh gross!! Did they have it displayed so that the risk of contamination/infection was controlled? Ooooo, so nasty. That's not art, that's icky. Just my opinion...
I really think she could have achieved the same effect with new bandaids, some iodine & colored water. Why expose yourself or others to God knows what? Maybe to shock? Still think this is highly unsanitary and unnecessary, about on a par with using some other things I could mention. And it may be considered art, but an art quilt it will never be to me.
Different? Yes.
Tactless and Gross? Yes.
Art? Not in my world.
Quilt? Definitely not.
Should be trashed in a Biohazard bag?? Yes.
Sometimes pushing the envelope is even too far.

the bandaid quilt is really cool looking from afar. but used bandaids? that's pretty gross.
It was neat looking in the first picture. But after you described it, I threw up in my mouth a little.

I like bandaids, so a quilt like this would be nice. However, I prefer unused bandaids. I can't imagine sleeping at night covered in a quilt teeming with MRSA, hepatitis, etc.
